What About Huckabee’s Christmas Ad?
Mike Huckabee has been accused of making a “subliminal” Christmas ad. I would dispute that accusation because the dictionary meaning of subliminal is “existing or operating below the threshold of consciousness.”
There is nothing in the ad “below the threshold of consciousness.” His message was obvious. He is a Christian and speaks of his Christian faith. So what! That is a given. That is not subliminal. He shows a Christmas tree in the background. Christmas trees are not subliminal. Some of us see a cross formed by the white bookcase in the background. So what! Whether intentional or not.. a cross is symbolic of his Christian faith. Why should this bother anyone? There is nothing sinister about being a Christian, seeing a Christmas tree or imagining a cross.
That being said and from what I see now, I will not support Mike Huckabee in the primaries.
His past positive record on various Conservative issues are to his advantage, however some of his other positions are an affront to Conservatives. In fact, many of his positions have been starkly liberal.
Examples
In Foreign Affairs, the pulp organ of the liberal Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), he wrote
“American foreign policy needs to change its tone and attitude, open up, and reach out. The Bush administration’s arrogant bunker mentality has been counterproductive at home and abroad.”
That could have been said by Hillary.
In the same liberal magazine, speaking of the United States, he wrote, still pandering to his liberal CFR readers:
“But if it [the United States] attempts to dominate others, it is despised.”
There are more. Mike should know we do not “dominate others.” We help and liberate others from tyranny when asked or when we are endangered we take action. His statements sound like that other Southern Baptist critic of the USA who ran for and won the White House, Jimmah Carter — the worst President this country has ever experienced.
I appreciate Mike’s outspoken Christianity. It does not bother me at all but I have real doubts about his political credentials. We certainly don’t want another Carter in the White House.
So who do real Conservative Christians support in the primaries? I honestly have no idea. There are no candidates anywhere on the horizon with a real “Reaganesque” history, persona or program.
Every candidate except Alan Keys has a long history of flip-flops and obfuscation. Maybe Alan?
What to do????? Maybe we should just preach the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ, His death for our sins and His resurrection. As Christ said speaking of Himself, “That whosoever believeth in Him [Jesus] should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:15
UPDATE: Book at BookwormRoom has a brilliant treatise on Huckabee.
It is a must-read for Christians!!

It is a difficulty performing our civic duty as citizens while clinging to our Christian convictions. No matter who we vote for, we’re voting for a sinner, LOL! Sinners voting for a sinner, in a world afloat in sewage, trying to make the sewer a little more livable. Sigh! I really believe that no candidate should run on the strength of his Christianity, because that is spiritual blackmail of his brothers and sisters in Christ (and pretty easily faked, by the way–remember Carter?). Candidates should run on their convictions, their records, and their clearly stated plans for what they desire to accomplish in their office. Then we, the people, could make an informed decision, ask God for wisdom, and vote accordingly.
Yeah, like that’ll ever happen!

Great thoughtful analysis, Lynda. and so true.
Yes I remember Jimmah Carter — and I did NOT vote for him. He was a closet socialist from the get-go.

Lynda,
Incidentally, though you are from Missouri, are you familiar with the Arkansas area and its politics?
What did you hear from the native Arnaksans about Huckabee as Governor and now as a candidate?

I’m pretty far from the Ark. border; altho’ hubby has family there, we don’t really have much to do with them, due to distance and busy schedules. I think I’m going to have to be an Alan Keyes or Duncan Hunter supporter. I’ve voted for Mr. Keyes before, but it did no good, and the Machinery of Big Politics continues to stick me with the lesser of two evils at every election cycle. The Repub ain’t great, but is better than the Dem!

Well, Lynda, what’s a Conservative to do? I Too am puzzled.
As a disappointed supporter of Eisenhower, a backer of Nixon, a foot-soldier for Goldwater (who was dismayed at his later disclosed closet liberalism), as a thrilled Reaganite and as a Conservative Christian and Bible preacher for many years, I find Huckabee lacking the innate qualities that made Reagan who he was. However, I do appreciate his pro-life and other socially responsible positions. But is that enough?
Huckabee’s pardon record as Governor, his squishiness on Immigration, his liberal record on taxes, his recent statements in the CFR’s liberal rag “Foreign Affairs” all convince me that he is no Ronald Reagan.. not even close. He has neither established nor displayed any long-term Conservative governmental credentials nor has he advocated or broadcast any Conservative governmental principles over the past ten years as did Reagan prior to his running for President. Huckabee seemingly pops up as a Johnny-come-lately. I see he also has the support of the liberal, Bill Clinton supporting Tyson chicken family in Arkansas. Hmmmm.
He disavows school vouchers which is one of several reasons he has gained the endorsement of the NEA Teachers Union in New Hampshire. How does this behavior comport with any Conservative principle?
What’s a Conservative Christian to do?

We’ve now reached the point in America where the people–or at least the most vocal ones, the ones who get lots of news and legal coverage–don’t want any overt expression of Christianity from political figures, even at Christmastime.
How far we are fallen away!
A Blessed Christmas to you and yours, Jack. I will continue to give such a greeting, whether or not some want me to. ;^)

Thanks AOW,
And we pray you and your family will have the most blessed Christ-day ever and an even better 2008 than 2007.
