For centuries man has misunderstood or misinterpreted many words in God’s Holy Scripture. “Scholars” debate the meanings of Biblical words and we must determine whether such interpretations are errors or truth. If errors, whether they are accidental or deliberate. Let’s take the wonderful and exhilarating word “Hope” and see if we can understand it. Of course this writing will be an abbreviated explanation of the word but it is a start.
One may say, “I hope it will not rain today.” “I hope my car will start when I have an emergency.” “I hope my children will grow up to be great citizens.” “I hope. I hope. I hope.”
The standard dictionary definition, and one that is generally accepted by most of the world is “to FEEL that something desired MAY happen:” The words “feel” and “may” are two very indefinite and vague words, but such a definition of “hope” exemplifies the thinking of most people.
The dictionary definition of the word “hope” is NOT the Biblical Hope of which we speak.
Let us investigate the Old and New Testament meanings of the word “Hope.”
Psalm 33:22
“Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.”
Hope in this verse is the Hebrew word, “yachal” meaning “trust.”
Psalm 130:7
“Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption.”
Again this is the same Hebrew word, “trust.”
Psalm 39:7
“And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.”
Here we see a slightly different Hebrew word “towcheleth“ but with the same root but meaning “expectation.” These and many, many more verses illustrate the Psalmist’s reliance upon the trustworthiness of the Lord. The Lord CAN be trusted. He WILL keep His promises.
Now, in the New Testament we see the word “Hope” in several verses. This word “Hope” is an absolute, a guarantee without a doubt. It is the Greek word “elpis” meaning “to expect or anticipate with pleasure.”
Romans 5:2
“By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
We rejoice in the glory of God, not with uncertainty but with joyful anticipation — guaranteed.
Colossians 1:5
“For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;“
The Hope of Heaven is not a maybe — but an absolute and definite guarantee by the Word of the Truth of the Gospel.
Titus 1:2
“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”
Eternal life — guaranteed and promised by the God of the Universe. He cannot lie.
Titus 2:13
“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”
Every true believer in Jesus Christ may look with confidence to the glorious appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ. No doubt!
Titus 3:7
“That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
We are Justified by God’s grace, guaranteed — Rendered innocent or free by God’s Grace, eternal life guaranteed!
As you read this, I want you to have that Hope or guarantee personally. God offers you this by His Grace.
Just briefly, no one deserves to live in Heaven or have eternal life with the Righteous God (Revelation 21:27). We are all sinners by nature and deed. Simply put, we have all sinned and come short of the mark of God’s righteousness (Romans 3:23). All sin requires a payment that must be paid — and that penalty is spiritual death, being apart from God in Hell (Romans 4:23).
By God’s Grace and Love He provided a Sin Bearer in the person of Jesus Christ who was crucified for our sin, was buried and rose again. This Grace is available to the whole world — including you personally (John 3:16). It is not determined by how good you are — or how hard you try — or by your good works, but by Grace alone, which means “undeserved mercy.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
How can we KNOW that Hope is real?
1 John 5:13
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
You can KNOW. God promises Heaven, the Hope (guarantee) of eternal life is when you trust that Jesus paid the death penalty in your place. He promises — and all you need do is to trust Jesus as your Savior. Believe His Word — He died for you.
If you have never trusted Jesus alone as your Savior, do that right now. Believe His promises of eternal life which are yours the very moment you trust Jesus as YOUR Savior.
Remember and believe this:
Jesus died — That is history. Jesus died for ME — that is salvation.
When you make that simple decision, your eternity in Heaven is secure in Jesus Christ. It is God’s guarantee, thus your HOPE of Heaven is guaranteed eternal. You are immediately declared righteous before a Holy God with no possibility of losing His Gift of salvation. Eternal life is ETERNAL — without end, beginning the moment you trust Christ as your personal Savior.
Romans 1:16
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek [gentile].”
Please, trust Jesus Christ as your Savior NOW! God has no strings attached! Claim that wonderful HOPE.

Excellent, ExP! That is the Hope I have! I await it in joyful, trusting expectation! It is too big to contain in my own life, it spills over into others. Since it is based on the ONLY ONE who can be trusted, the ONLY ONE who CAN perform it, I have no doubts! That is my Rock that keeps me safe and secure against all storms! I can rest, because my HOPE never slumbers or sleeps, HE stands guard over me and I can’t help but rejoice!
Good morning, G*D bless and Maranatha!

We often hear people say, “I hope that …..” Sometimes it is a sincere hope, like the hope that the money to pay for the mortgage comes in on time so your cheque does not bounce. Sometimes it is the hope of somebody you love getting better and not passing on. Other times it is futile things that don’t really matter like, hoping that your next door neighbour invites you to his party or that the bridge isn’t too crowded so you have to wait a simple 5 minutes. There is a true hope and there is a futile hope that really isn’t a hope at all, just a desire for instant or even delayed gratification.

G’day Dominic,
Good explanation of secular hope..
But that differs from my treatise on Biblical Hope.. which is a guarantee.
Thanks for stopping by.

hello,
i am starting a website called yeshope com. it is not published yet. i am wondering if you would allow me to use some of your experiences and words of wisdom on the website…plus, we would be blessed even more if you would add to our website with a true story of someones hopes that came through. our website is going to be focused on those who have, or are going through a very hard time in their lives… for persons that have no hope in sight….hoping to lift them out of thier pit and show Gods mercy and love, so they can “push-on” with the life that God would want them to lead….ultimately for Him…for God. I myself have been in such a “pit”, and told our lord that I would spread His word of hope and faith and love…in the hopes of bringing peace back to someone before they give-up. I am just starting this website, by myself and any help from you or others who have true stories to tell, plus words of wisdom…would be deeply appreciated. I hope to make this website well known over time…but not for my glory (as I will not mention my name) but only for Gods glory and others who need words of encouragement. Thank you for any help you may offer.

Marty,
Thanks for stopping by,
You will notice that I removed your primary web site link — because we do not advertise businesses.
You are welcome to use any of my stories or quotes as long as you attribute them to ExPreacherMan and give my Blog location link.
My first suggestion is that you emphasize the Gospel of Jesus Christ… because without a person trusting Christ, there is NO HOPE.

Thank you for a very well written article. This really gave me some anchors to hold on to. Thank you for showing clearly the difference between human hope and Godly hope.

Diane,
Thanks for stopping by..
Aren’t you glad when you see the word “Hope” in the Bible that it has God’s absolute guarantee behind it?
What a wonderful Savior we have!
He is our only Hope.

I read your answer to “what is hope” I liked it. Can you tell me, how do you build up your hope? And in the Bible, are there different words for the hope you get from having received from God, a past experience (or is that hope? maybe it moves from hope to faith), and the hope we have of things to come, going to heaven someday?

God bless you!
expreacherman // October 5, 2009 at 7:50 am
Thanks Wally,
Hope is gained by trusting Jesus Christ alone as one’s Savior, by Faith. First faith in Jesus, then God’s guarantee.. One who has not faith in Christ has no eternal hope!
Hope is God’s guarantee..

Hi Pastor. I am a Parish Nurse in Dunnellon, Fl. and I am planning a healing, pushing-through service on nov.1 , All Saints Day. The theme is on Hope. You have answered many questions for me you also helped me raise some questions. I am praying for the Holy Spirit to guide our service. I am planning to end the service with the people coming to the alter and there I will have a white plastic egg with HOPE painted in gold on the outside and a wooden cross on the inside. This is to remind them that Jesus is our HOPE and you can n ot have hope without HIM. Thankyou again and Blessings to you and your family…Joey
ExPreacherMan // October 23, 2009 at 7:49 am
Joey,
Glad our post on Hope could benefit you. We must remember God’s Word is the real source of truth.
I’m not sure what a “a healing, pushing-through service” is. We are instructed to pray for and comfort the sick but God heals according to His will. There are times when God does not want us to be physically healed.. and we cannot force His will.
The symbolism of the egg and the cross may take away from the simplicity of the Gospel Message, however. True, our only Hope is Jesus Christ and that is a good point.
In any service, we should make sure that we present Jesus Christ clearly as the only way of salvation and the only mediator between God and Man — there is no other. No church, preacher, Pastor or leader can remit our sins or give us salvation. Only by trusting Jesus Christ and Him alone as our Savior.
Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, died for the sins of the entire world, all of them. He was buried and rose again — to be seen of many.. He is the only salvation provided by God to man — to anyone who will trust Him alone as their Savior..
Please let me know what questions that were raised but not answered.
Praying for you in your ministry, Joey.
In Jesus Christ eternally,
Exp(Jack)

God bless you. One of the best explanations/study I have heard. Why are you referred to as Ex?
ExPreacherMan // December 3, 2009 at 8:57 am
Hi Wilma,
Thanks for your kind words..
Ex? I am retired from an active, organized ministry… however I do share Jesus Christ with everyone I meet if possible. Once a Preacher, always a “Preacher” as we follow God’s Word.
It is often difficult since I am infirm, almost blind and more or less confined to home.. That is the main reason for my Blog.. Reaching people for Jesus Christ.
The Lord has been gracious to us and we enjoy and try to live by His Grace.
In Jesus Christ eternally,
